SUMMER IS HERE
Bolehills BMX Track: Opening Jam 2023

Words & Photography by Dave Camus & Charlie Clark

After a long hard winter of graft and changes to the track, the Bolehills dig crew let the public loose on the wild new features at the Bolehills BMX Opening Jam 2023. The forecast didn’t look great for the Saturday so the event was pushed back a day – just in time for summer to arrive. Over 250 riders came to enjoy the smooth new white waves of Sheffield, travelling as far as Surrey to get the first laps.

Bolehills is a one-of-a-kind BMX Track. Not quite trails, not quite a BMX track – somewhere in-between. A community of riders and builders of all ages. A place where the young riders can learn the skills needed to roast through a set of dirt jumps, and the understanding of the hard graft it takes to keep a set of trails running.

A new 3rd straight had been created, targeted towards intermediate riders looking to progress towards riding the biggest sets on the track. There was also a roller line through the centre which catered for those not quite ready to get airtime yet – but this didn’t stop those with the smallest wheels rolling through and getting air off the steepest lips!

A hugely technical snake line had been created as well – maybe one of the more challenging sets in the UK. A great test of the best riders, and rewarded those who worked to learn the lines and catch the landings. The main backset line had been tickled but not changed too much, and kept riders coming back for more.

In the spirit of Bolehills, anyone that donated £5 got to pick a free prize courtesy of The Bikes College. We also had some great prizes for the main event thanks to FreerideUK & High Peak Cycles. A jam format on each of the new straights was the order of the day, to get everyone involved in throwing down their best lines. The show of style and going the highest was something to behold. Prizes were given to our favourite riders to watch, as well as to some younger kids who battled their way through the lines. Some inspirational stuff.

As always, the session was closed down by trains into the sunset along the back set. Keep eyes on our socials for a few more events and evening sessions this year as we celebrate 40 years of riding up at Bolehills BMX Track.

The track is fully supported by rider donations, T-Shirt sales, and local bike shops. This buys surface, feeds the dig team, and puts fuel in the machines. No big council cash injections here.

After a long winter of digging, the lines were finally open to ride. Just check the signage before you drop in!

Bolehills has a rich history, with the original club being formed in 1983. The track has gone through many iterations – BMX race track, homegrown dirt jumps as featured in Sprung – the track now is somewhere between the two. All have a common theme of being maintained and built by local riders.

Brainiac records were on hand to keep the tunes pumping all day from the DJ tent.

The 3rd straight catered for all riders from advanced right down to 14-inch wheels. Here’s a couple of the younger riders getting it sent and not phased by the crowds.

bigquotes 25 years ago I popped up to Bolehills as I heard there was a track there, and went on to make friends with the most amazing characters ever. Witnessing my young lad enjoy the track on Sunday 25 years on was quite emotional, the work you guys do is deeper than shaping dirt. Thank you.

bigquotes Jules [8 yrs] was so inspired by the new build and winning a prize at the jam, that he insisted the next day on going out and getting his jumps back into shape!

Local lad Louis Clegg has been hard on the graft this winter, and nice to see it all paying off with rapid progression now the lines are open. All the concentration through the backsnake berm.

Not quite sure why Clay Gibson got down to his undershorts but sure seemed to be working for him. Buzzing on the clean backflip to dirt.

This really shows the scale of what has been created by the dig team. Best new line in the UK this year?
